Kenneth A. Helmer, a Senior Associate with Helmer •
Friedman, LLP, divides his time between general litigation and
entertainment industry transactions.
Mr. Helmer represents individuals in a variety of employment related
disputes, focusing primarily on pregnancy-disability leave, sexual
harassment and other forms of discrimination. He also has vast
experience representing litigants in matters of personal injury,
wage claims, breach of contract and fraud related claims. Mr. Helmer
advises individuals and small businesses in general business
matters, formation, contractual disputes and intellectual property
issues, including trademark and copyright uses and misappropriation
of trade secrets.
As an attorney with years of experience in the entertainment
industry, Mr. Helmer represents film producers, writers and
directors as well as musical artists, songwriters, film composers,
and record producers. Mr. Helmer also has extensive experience
serving as business affairs counsel on behalf of numerous
independent film production companies, record labels, music
publishing companies and festival concert promoters.
Mr. Helmer received his J.D. degree from UCLA School of Law in 1997
and his B.A. degree in Political Science from University of
California at Berkeley in 1992, where he also studied music
composition.
Law & Politics Magazine and the publishers of Los Angeles Magazine
recognized Mr. Helmer as a 2005 Southern California "Rising Star" in
the category of Arts and Entertainment.
Prior to joining Helmer Friedman, LLP in 2001, Mr. Helmer was a
founding partner of Bennett, Callie and Helmer, a boutique
entertainment law firm based in Beverly Hills, California, focusing
exclusively on representing creative talent in the film and music
industries. Mr. Helmer also served as a legal intern for the General
Counsel and Vice President of Business Affairs of Activision, Inc.,
a leading interactive, entertainment software company.
As a supporter of the creative arts, Mr. Helmer strives to educate
and inform musicians about the legal and business aspects of their
field. Among other things, Mr. Helmer has provided legal services
for the Society of Composers and Lyricists, has been a guest
lecturer at the Musicians Institute on music contracts, and served
as an advisor for best-selling book, “The Craft and Business of
Songwriting” by author and music industry consultant, John Braheny.
Mr. Helmer’s professional memberships include, among others, the Los
Angeles County Bar Association, the California Copyright Conference,
the Association of Independent Music Publishers and the State Bar of
California.
