Melanie Partow, a Senior Associate with Helmer •
Friedman, LLP, divides her time between general litigation, civil
rights, and
employment litigation.
Prior to joining Helmer Friedman, LLP, Ms. Partow worked as an
Associate for Schonbrun DeSimone Seplow Harris & Hoffman, LLP, a
plaintiff's civil rights and international human rights law firm in
Venice, California. Ms. Partow has represented plaintiffs in actions
involving workplace discrimination and litigated cases against state
and federal agencies for civil rights violations, including police
abuse and excessive force, inadequate medical care, and violations
of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ms. Partow has also focused
on Alien Tort Claims Act litigation involving multinational
corporate liability for complicity in human rights violations under
international law. Before she began working as an attorney on civil
and human rights issues in the United States, Ms. Partow served as a
law clerk for the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal
Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, in the Hague, the Netherlands.
Ms. Partow is currently reading for her Master of Studies in
International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford. She
received her J.D from Southwestern University School of Law in 2004,
where she was a Pacific Region Finalist in the Jessup International
Law Moot Court Competition. As an undrgraduate student, Ms. Partow
attended the University of Oregon where she pursued a double major
in political science and international studies. Ms. Partow also
studied international relations with the World Learning School for
International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. While in Geneva, she
also reported on corporate codes of conduct as an intern for the
United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service, a sub-commission of
the Conference on Trade and Development at the Palais des Nations.
Ms. Partow works to support the creation of a rule of law, which
holds both corporations and individuals accountable for actions that
violate the equal right of men and women to civil, political,
economic, cultural, and social rights. Ms. Partow teaches and speaks
at universities, law schools, and to public audiences on a variety
of issues including: the International Criminal Court; United States
foreign policy and human rights; civil society and international
organizations; public international law; and international human
rights law. Ms. Partow is a founding member of the American Network
of International Criminal Court Alumni (ANNICA). She also currently
serves as an alumni adviser for Southwestern Law School's top-ranked
Stetson international environmental law moot court team.
