State and Federal law protect against many types of civil rights violations, including those instances where government officials (such as police officers) engage in conduct that causes wrongful death or injury or which results in excessive force, false arrest or imprisonment.
Defamation (Libel and Slander)
Defamation(libel and slander) is generally defined to mean a false statement that harms an individual’s reputation and exposes the individual to hatred, contempt, ridicule, or obloquy (censure), or which causes him to be shunned or avoided, or which has a tendency to injure him in his occupation. If the false statement is “published” in print or through broadcast media, such as radio or TV, it is called libel. If the false statement is orally spoken, it is called slander.
The following examples illustrate some of the most common types of defamation cases that we handle:
- Statements that charge a person with a crime, or with having been indicted, convicted, or punished for a crime;
- Statements that a person has an infectious, contagious, or loathsome disease;
- Statements that tend to directly injure a person in his or her office, profession, trade or business;
- Statements that suggest a person is impotent or not chaste.
